Most of us become pessimist about many of the things during pregnancy. We scrutinize everything for health and safety when it comes to our bodies and our babies on the way. A recent study says that our skepticism may be warranted when it comes to home products or products of daily usage.

A research, published in the American Chemical Society journal Environmental Science & Technology, suggests that exposure to substances found commonly in our personal care products, food packages, and other household items, could be associated with miscarriage.

The substance is called phthalates and is used in hundreds of consumer products. Researchers have found that this substance is associated with losses most commonly between fifth week and thirteenth week of pregnancy.

The US government was concerned about the safety of phthalates and that’s why they have already banned six from use in products made for young kids. But still the products like paints, soaps and shampoos consist of this substance.

The study based on data about the general population and the people who had exposure to the phthalates substance through their work. The results are a little scary, but there are a couple of things that need to be noticed. The research didn’t prove that phthalates cause miscarriage; it only suggested an association between phthalates and miscarriage. This association should be further examined. Secondly, this research based on the data from 300 women in China, so that’s very small sample. However, it supports the idea that a certain amount of reasonable skepticism about our environment, especially during pregnancy, may be healthy.
